I should have guessed. What I have read by Lewis that's along these lines is his Oxford History of English Literature volume on the 16th century, which is full of delightful and delectable descriptions of literally dozens of deservedly obscure authors. (Every one of whom Lewis sat down in the Bodleian and read, and then wrote an essay on as if for his own college tutor, and kept revising until he'd give himself the top grade.)
