This is very good. It leaves out the physical techniques that have served me so well on many occasions, more tailored to conflicts between two third parties than a single hostile person, but useful in any event.
And I don't think "affirming" is quite as complex or difficult as you do, but I do acknowledge the trap you're pointing out. I wouldn't call it "affirm," I would probably call it "connect."
