post-Christmas quiz
Whew, fortunately Jon Carroll's annual Christmas quiz was only "temporarily felled by the vile California flu". Sorry to hear that; glad to know it's all right now. And the answers?
I had no trouble with questions 15 or 16, or question 9, though doubt prompts an intention to check up to see if it's true, as Carroll says, that Prince Charles was specifically named for King Charles I. I also got questions 2 and 14, though with a little hesitation.
Questions 6, 10, 11, and 18 I got parts of right but didn't know other parts. I did know that "Khalikistan" does not exist, but only two of the four real countries seem to me to be north of Tibet, and that only in small parts, unless by "north of Tibet" he means "further north than Tibet," the way Boston is north of San Diego. I got part of 11 right only because one of those baseball players went on to serve in Congress; otherwise I'd never have heard of him any more than the others.
The answer to question 5 frustrated me, because I guessed that the remarkable characteristic of US 395 is that it re-enters California, but I couldn't guess what about US 50 was shared by that. Comes of not living in Maryland or West Virginia.
Question 8 I didn't get, though I recognized quote c and where it's from. The location of quote e is pretty obvious, but I couldn't verify offhand that the wording was accurate.
I didn't get question 4 either, and not even the term "golf ball" tipped me off.
Question 13 I didn't get, so I looked it up out of curiosity. I've seen only two of those five movies, and I didn't like either of them. Dances with Wolves was the kind of film which the term "pretentious" was invented to describe, and the only good thing in Ghost was a superb performance by the supporting actor who died this week.
Total blanks on questions 1, 3, 7, 12, and 17.
