You might be interested in what Wilson says about Lovecraft in connection with his bashing of SF: "Even some of the genuine classics of fantasy and suspense, like Merritt's Seven Footprints of Satan or the novels of Lovecraft, are so badly written that one must simply accept the atrocious style as a sort of convention."

About that, taken as an observation rather than a negative criticism, I think he's right.
