The London Underground sells, or used to sell, day passes designed specifically for tourists. They were only good from something like 10:30 AM on, so as to prevent commuters from using them.
The Tristate is charging twice as much for cash and online customers as for transponders. That's gouging tourists with a vengeance, but I don't mind much because it's not that expensive and I'll only be there for a few days, and it's laid out clearly on the website, not as a hidden surprise.
