For what it's worth, Sideways is quite well aware of whatever pretensions its characters have. (The Academy's qualifications for "leading role" are often nebulous; in 1972, they notoriously nominated Brando- who had not much more than half an hour's screen time- for Best Actor, and left Pacino with a Best Supporting nomination.)
