I'm not sure either is accurate. He always had his own vision, but it tended to be very strategic. And he was never the only visionary, wherever he worked. Apple has a lot of Woz in it still. The iPhone would not be what it is without the kind of creative "do more with less" engineering that Woz was so good at. The unprecedented deal with AT&T to sell the iPhone on Apple's terms, that had to be pure Steve.
