I know there are horrible examples; I've had authors express mighty relief when they see my work, because they were so put off by previous experience. Some of the worst, I think, are copyeditors who really want to be writers themselves.

I think copyeditors should have tattooed across the back of their hands: Its Not My Book. It's my mantra.
