reaching the border

I do not know what the bankruptcy/reorganization of Borders Books means for the future of the firm in particular or retail bookselling in general, any more than others with more wisdom or lore in these matters, but I do have some reaction to the local implications of the list of closing stores.

That list actually makes me happy, because the two near our home, which we visit most often, are not closing, but the one over the hill in Santa Cruz, which has long been threatening to suck the life out of the fine independent bookstore right up the street, is. Hah!

They closed down their UK operation a couple of years ago. Most of the stores still seem to be empty - certainly the one in this city.

Of the two Tower Records stores I used to go, one has been taken over by another, and much duller, music retailer. The other now sells pet food.
