I got so numbed by Mattie telling everybody and sundry about Chaney's face in the old movie (an example of everything being explained three times, when we'd already seen Chaney's face) that I must have missed the subtle reference in the new movie.

The visuals may have been something of a throwback, but not very far. It looks like other 60s movies, not like 40s ones.
