I'm sure it's clear why MTT stayed with San Francisco until he retired, resisting any blandishments to go to New York or other more glamorous places. He had here a world-class orchestra, as good as any in the country (and he had a large part in making it so) which could do anything he asked them to, and surely there was no other city where he and his husband could feel more comfortable and welcomed than SF.
