I can't imagine my life without fandom. Other social groups I've tried just haven't felt as comfortable for me and I've always come back.

As far as neofans entering sf faanish fanzine fandom, I think what happened is that beginning in the late 70s and early 80s, there were other, less defined, social/correspondence networks that it was easier to enter.
