The Pearl I haven't read, though I have a friend (much more attuned to modern literature than I) who admires it greatly. But by your experience the omission may have saved me from a bad reaction to Steinbeck. Still, even some of the books I did read are bad. You may be lucky you missed To a God Unknown, whose title alone suggests how gassy it is.
