Chaucer does have a habit of becoming all things to all people.
I recently read a major biography which depicts him as a proto internationalist European.
While he was widely travelled........no.
Much of Tolkien's fiction delves into earlier English literature than our Geoffrey.
As a Midlander, he was very aware of Langland, for instance. Since moving to the Midlands, I've been reading Piers Plowman with a new eye.
